Buying Used: Getting a Kayak on the Cheap

It’s almost the first day of summer—the temperatures lately would have you fooled that it was here already—and still there are plenty of us without our own canoe or kayak. I went to an outdoor store the other day asking about renting for a day: “We can drop it off anywhere for you. The cost is $50 bucks per day.” I thought: I should be able to buy a canoe or kayak for twice that for a whole summer of paddling. I left the store a bit dejected, knowing that another day would pass that I’d be waving to paddler-passerby, wishing I too could be gliding over the cool water, laughing at the landlubbers on the banks.

Boating Safety Basics

Whether hitting the water in a canoe, rowboat, sailboat or powerboat, all craft operators should know the basics of boating safety to protect themselves, their passengers and other boaters. In 2007, the U.S. Coast Guard reported 685 deaths and more than $53.1 million in damages as a result of boating accidents. The top five contributing factors in accidents were operator inattention, reckless operation, passenger/skier behavior, excessive speed and alcohol use – all factors within the control of the boat operator.
